Lala Kedarnath (Balraj Sahni) is a wealthy trader, enjoying life with wife and three sons when an earthquake destroys his house and scatters the family. His eldest son Raja (Raj Kumar) escapes from an orphanage and grows up to become a thief. The second son Ravi (Sunil Dutt) finds refuge in a wealthy family and the youngest son Vijay (Shashi Kapoor) becomes a driver. The lala himself serves a sentence for murder. The film revolves around the lives of Raja, Ravi and Vijay even as the lala continues his quest for his family. They cross each other’s path a few times only to unite in an emotional climax at the end of a courtroom drama where Ravi successfully extricates Raja from a murder charge.
